Professional Teeth Cleaning

We perform professional dental cleanings in order to remove plaque buildup and debris that may be trapped around the gum line or in between the teeth. It is important that plaque and food debris be removed from the teeth, as when left to fester the result is a buildup of calculus—the main contributor to periodontal gum disease.

Professional dental cleanings are just as important as daily brushing and flossing. Because we use specialized tools they are therefore able to remove plaque buildup from the surfaces of your teeth. Plaque comes from a collection of bacteria in the mouth that forms on the tooth’s surface leading to decay and gum disease. These professional cleanings also allow us to remove any existing tartar from the teeth. Tartar is plaque that has been left to harden on the tooth’s surface. If left to continue to grow and harden tartar will lead to gum disease. Once hardened regular brushing and flossing will not remove the tartar buildup, but rather require specialized tools for removal. Routine dental cleanings also allow us to remove surface stains and discoloration by polishing.

Dental Exam

Regular dental exams help you to protect your oral health by way of preventive cleaning and early detection of oral health concerns. These consistent dental checkups allow us to catch oral health issues before they become too severe, thus protecting your teeth, gums and mouth. When left undetected and/or treated, small dental health issues can become more severe, requiring far more costly and extensive procedures to repair.

During your dental exam Dr. Hablutzel will scan your oral cavity for signs of gum disease, oral cancer and decay. By way of x-rays and physical examination, any concerns present will be further examined, discussed and treated to prevent further concern.

Benjamin Franklin said it best when he said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Dental X-Ray

Dental x-rays are used as a vital tool in early detection of oral health problems. Identifying issues via x-ray allows us to address problems before they become more concerning. Problems that go undetected will likely lead to more extensive and expensive necessary procedures for treatment.

X-rays can help us to identify tooth decay, tumors, cysts and impacted teeth.

Dr. Hablutzel uses digital dental x-rays which boast many advantages to traditional dental x-rays. Some of these advantages include:

•  A more refined and enlarged image

•  Up to 90 percent less radiation

•  Instant access for examinations

•  Computer compatibility convenience

•  Environmentally friendly (no processing required)

Dental Sealants

If Dr. Hablutzel suspects tooth decay is imminent, it will likely be recommended to you that the tooth be protected by a dental sealant. Sealants are typically used to help prevent the onset of tooth decay. Because the natural grooves of the molars and biting teeth make it easy for food to become trapped, despite brushing and flossing efforts, it sometimes becomes necessary to protect these vulnerable surfaces with a sealant. Food that is left trapped within the tooth leads to a rapid colonization of bacteria, which eventually results in tooth decay.

Sealants are not permanent, but they are highly effective at protecting the tooth against decay, thus saving you money and time in future restoration procedures. Generally speaking, a dental sealant will last on average 5 years before requiring replacement.

Dental sealants are a cost-effective way to prevent the onset of dental decay and a highly effective way to reduce the chances that tooth decay will become a problem. Though sealants can protect the teeth from dental decay, they cannot and should not be used to replace daily brushing and flossing, but rather used in concurrence with.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally and possesses the unique ability to restore and revitalize the enamel that helps to protect our teeth. Interestingly, fluoride plays a critical role in the development of teeth for children. As the teeth are forming in children, before they have broken through the gums fluoride is pulled from the things they eat and drink, and strengthens the enamel of their teeth. This process of strengthening teeth before eruption from the gum line helps to protect the teeth against cavity-causing bacteria.

Oral Cancer Screening

Regular care of your mouth is necessary for maintaining optimal oral health. Just as important as daily brushing and flossing are, your bi-annual visits for cleanings and exams are also important. Cleanings are designed to eliminate all buildup from the surfaces of your teeth, including from the areas that you might otherwise have a difficult time removing. Exams allow us to spot a wide variety of different issues in their earliest stages, which then enables us to provide you with the necessary treatment to prevent those issues from getting worse.

Gum Disease (Gingivitis)

To date, according to the American Dental Association, gum disease accounts for approximately 70 percent of tooth loss in the American adults. The early signs of gum disease are easily detected during regular routine dental exams and are critical to preventing progression of the disease and even reversing the effects of the disease.

Signs of periodontal gum disease include swollen, red gums that bleed when flossing or brushing.

The bacteria that causes tooth decay is the same bacteria that is said to lead to periodontal gum disease. When left to colonize, these bacteria will form a thick layer of a clear, sticky substance known as plaque. This plaque, if not removed, will eventually begin to eat away at the bond between the gum and the tooth, thus leading to gum “pockets.” These pockets, if deeper than 4 millimeters, indicate the onset of periodontal gum disease. If Dr. Hablutzel notices gum pockets of this depth or deeper it will likely be recommended that you undergo a special treatment aimed at cleaning and removing these bacteria from beneath the gumline.

If left untreated and if not maintained, periodontal gum disease will progress and eventually result in bone and tissue loss, which ultimately leads to tooth loss. Because there is no permanent treatment for gum disease, it is therefore important that you make every effort to prevent the onset it; that means daily brushing and flossing, as well as taking advantage of preventive services.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are two common steps performed in most adult dental cleaning appointments. In simpler terms, it is the removal of hardened plaque, known as tartar or calculus. Removing this material, that naturally accumulates on your teeth, is important to the health of your teeth.
