It removes debris from in between your teeth and can gently remove food that is lodged in between your teeth. It is truly beneficial and is something that should be practiced regularly. So what happens if you don't do it properly? Well, it isn't the end of the world, but...
What Can Happen if You Don't Floss Correctly?
Flossing is supposed to help your teeth and your gums. If you don't floss correctly, you can actually damage your mouth rather than help it. When you floss you are dislodging the debris between your teeth and disrupting the hideouts of the bacteria that settles in your mouth. When you properly disrupt the environment for the bacteria, it makes it more difficult for it to get a hold on your tooth and begin its cavity causing process.
When you floss you are supposed to wrap the floss around your tooth and then in a gentle motion, move the floss up and down to remove the debris and loosen the plaque. The problem is that many people don't floss properly. If you don't floss properly, then you will not reap the benefits. You may even cause damage to your teeth.
So What Do People Do Wrong?
Some people floss up and down like they are supposed to but when they do they do it with such force that they can damage their gums on the downswing. This can cause the gums to bleed, but more importantly, can offer a path for the bacteria to get into your bloodstream and cause you more problems.
Another problem people have when they floss is that instead of an up and down movement, they instead use a sawing motion. If you are a saw master just stop flossing until you can contact our office for us to show you the proper technique.
